Oxford really is “Alabama At Its Best” this week as the best in the state come here to play.

The 2026 Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) Baseball and Softball Championships began on Monday, May 18, 2026, at Choccolocco Park.

The games, which are scheduled to run through Friday, May 22, bring the state’s best athletes to town for a full week of competition at the region’s premier sports complex.

Mayor Alton Craft gave the official welcome as he took to the pitcher’s mound, surrounded by several softball teams totaling more than 100 players who made the trip to Oxford in the quest for a championship trophy.

“Thank you for all of your accomplishments this year,” Craft said. “It was hard to get here, and I hope you do the best you have ever done. No matter what you do, you leave it all on the field.”

Lisa Nichols, who has served as administrator for UAB St. Vincent’s St. Clair Hospital for the past decade, threw out the ceremonial first pitch. UAB is partnering on plans to bring a freestanding emergency room facility to Oxford.

“It’s an honor to be asked to do something like this and represent UAB St. Vincent’s St. Clair,” Nichols said. “The partnership we are forming with the city of Oxford and the Oxford Health Care Authority is very exciting as it will allow us to offer good local care here.”

AHSAA executive director Heath Harmon thanked the city of Oxford and the Choccolocco Park staff for providing “an elite experience for this championship,” and called the players “the best in education-based athletics.”

“These teams represent the best playing at their very best,” Harmon said. “This is also the best venue, which is so important, with the great people here who do all the work behind the scenes, coordinating all the details which make the games operate smoothly.”

Event parking is $5 for those without a Choccolocco Park parking pass. Passes are free for residents and $25 for non-residents and are available at the Oxford Civic Center located at 410 McCullars Lane.
